Powering the Future from Our Soil: "Mylatty" of Kasaragod to Host Kerala's First Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)

Big news for Kasaragod! The serene village of Mylatty, nestled in our very own district, is all set to become a landmark in Kerala’s clean energy journey. The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) will sign an MoU with the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) to establish the State’s first Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) right here in Mylatty.

But what exactly is BESS—and why is it such a big deal?

๐Ÿ”‹ What is a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)?

Think of BESS as a giant power bank for the electric grid. It stores surplus electricity produced—especially from renewable sources like solar—when demand is low (like during the daytime) and releases it when demand peaks (like in the evening). This ensures energy is not wasted and helps maintain grid stability.

The proposed unit in Mylatty will have a capacity of 125 MW/500 MWh—enough to power thousands of homes when they need it the most.

⚡ Why is this Important?

  • Better Use of Solar Energy: Solar energy is generated when the sun shines—usually during low-demand hours. BESS stores this power for later, making solar energy more useful and reliable.

  • Reduced Dependence on Fossil Fuels: During peak hours, instead of firing up polluting thermal power plants, we can rely on stored green energy.

  • Grid Stability: BESS helps in balancing fluctuations in power supply and demand—especially as we add more renewable sources to our energy mix.

  • Cost Saving: It reduces the need to purchase expensive power during peak hours, benefiting both KSEB and ultimately, the consumer.

๐Ÿก Local Pride, Global Vision

It’s a proud moment for Kasaragod to host this futuristic step in energy infrastructure. With ₹135 crore in viability gap funding from the Central Government, this project shows how even a small village like Mylatty can be at the heart of a major green energy transformation.

This is not just about technology—it’s about progress, sustainability, and putting our district on the renewable energy map.
