Kerala's Upgraded National Highway: A Game-Changer for Electric Vehicle Transportation

 

Kerala, known for its scenic landscapes and lush greenery, is set to witness a transformative boost in transportation infrastructure with its upgraded National Highway, the state’s prestigious National Highway project, set to be completed by 2026, promises to revolutionize travel and significantly boost electric vehicle (EV) adoption.

For years, Kerala’s hilly terrain and uneven roads have posed challenges for EVs. Steep gradients consume more energy, leading to improper range estimation by EV users and making long-distance travel hectic. As EV adoption grows, the need for smooth, gradient-free roads has become critical to ensure consistent performance and efficiency. 

The upgraded National Highway, stretching across key regions of Kerala, is designed to provide a low-gradient route, which will significantly benefit EV users by enhancing range by reducing energy consumption. This development is set to open new doors for EV users, making long-distance travel in electric vehicles more practical and efficient. 

Smooth and Efficient Travel

The highway’s seamless connectivity reduces stop-and-go traffic, further optimizing energy use for electric vehicles.  Less braking and acceleration mean more efficient driving, enhancing the overall experience for EV owners.  

Cruise Control for Better Efficiency  

Since the upgraded highway stretches over a long distance with fewer interruptions, cruise control will finally be useful in Kerala! Earlier, this feature was more like a fancy add-on because we never had the smooth roads to actually use it. Now, EV drivers can enjoy a relaxed ride while saving energy at the same time. 

Single Pedal or Regen Drive for Safety and Control

On smooth, gradient-free highways, single pedal driving or regenerative braking becomes more effective, offering better braking and handling. EV drivers who prioritize safety and control can opt for maximum regen modes to ensure smoother deceleration and improved vehicle management.

Zero or Lower Regen Mode for Comfort

For those who prefer a comfortable and relaxed drive, zero or low regenerative braking modes provide a smoother driving experience, making long-distance journeys more enjoyable.

Accurate Range Estimation 

Gradient-free roads allow EVs to estimate range more accurately, eliminating uncertainties in battery life and reducing range anxiety during long-distance journeys.  

Extended Tyre Life for EVs

Smooth and straight stretches minimize tyre wear, which is already observed in EVs like the Tata Nexon EV, where tyre life exceeds that of petrol variants. This highway is expected to further enhance tyre longevity.  

Boost to Inter-District Commerce 

The highway will be a boon for inter-district commerce, allowing faster movement of goods with electric vehicles, contributing to faster and more economical transportation.  

Adoption of Small EV Trucks in Logistics  

   Small EV trucks such as Tata Ace EV and Switch Mobility trucks will find the highway highly beneficial. With smoother routes and lower transportation costs, these vehicles can deliver parcels faster, enabling a significant boost to Kerala’s logistics sector.  

Adoption of long route Electric Passenger Buses in Private Sector  

Kerala is currently lagging in the adoption of electric passenger buses by private owners, but the introduction of this highway will change that. With better roads and charging infrastructure, the deployment of electric buses for long-distance and inter-city routes will become more feasible. Reduced operating costs, coupled with an increase in passenger comfort, will encourage public transport systems to shift to EVs.
